A census of the Irish population was taken every ten years from 1821 until 1911, of which only the 1901 and 1911 records have survived. The National Archives of Ireland holds the original records.

Everyone seems to have heard about the Four Courts Fire of 1922, and how "all the records were destroyed." Censuses of the whole island (of Ireland) were taken in 1821, 1831, 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1901 and 1911. The first four were largely destroyed in a fire in the Public Records Office (Four Courts) in 1922.
An introduction: information regarding births, marriages, and deaths was not always recorded and, even when it was, it was not always written down accurately, especially in birth and death records. Approximately 15% of births were not registered, especially in the earlier period.
The people of Ireland in 1851 proved to be 1,622,739 less numerous than in 1841, a diminution commonly attributed to the famine consequent on the potato failure in 1845 and subsequent years.

The Down Survey of Ireland was carried out by Sir William Petty on behalf of the Commonwealth government. This so called '1659 census' was in reality a poll tax, levied on every head of household counted. Despite its imperfection the poll tax provides us with an interesting view of Kilkenny's population, representing the first 'census' of population ever conducted.

When the Old Age Pension was introduced in Ireland in 1908, people had to prove they were over 70 years of age in order to qualify. As Civil Registration did not begin until 1864, birth certificates were not available for those born before that date.

Bohola is a small village of less than a thousand people positioned in the center of Co. Mayo and is not on most maps of Ireland. It is located five miles south of Swinford and ten miles east of Castlebar.
Census data that was submitted based on civil parish is organized here by civil parish. Otherwise, it is organized by District Electoral Division, which were defined areas of townlands. Be sure to check both indexes to look for your townland. A few townlands are duplicated on both the civil parish and DED organization.

Full government censuses were taken for all of Ireland every ten years from 1821-1911. In 1922, during the Civil war most of the returns for 1821-1851 were destroyed during a fire at the Four Courts which was then the public records office, some remnants do remain.

All the people listed below were Roman Catholic Nuns, members of the Sister of Mercy Order, and could read and write.
No guarantee is given that the following are accurate, as names can sometimes be difficult to read due to poor handwriting and condition of the films. Every person in St. joseph's on that night was a Roman Catholic, and all could read and write. Bridget Sheehan was the only married person on this list.
