Death Records

Civil registration of all births, marriages, and deaths became mandatory in Ireland as of 1864 and were recorded by the government from then onwards. From 1864 they were indexed by year, but were indexed quarterly from 1877/78. Approximately 15% of all births and deaths weren't recorded in the earlier years and non-Catholic marriages were recorded from 1845. Prior to these dates, Church records are the best avenue for genealogy and family history researchers as well as gravestone transcriptions. You may see these records noted as "BMD indexes".
