The Townlands Of Kilkenny County |
County Kilkenny was divided into 1,683 townlands (circa 1851). A townland represents one of the smallest geographic units in Ireland, and vary in size anywhere from a few acres to over 3,000 acres. The average size of a townland in Kilkenny is probably between 300 and 350 acres, and their boundaries often follow landownership patterns. Because townland names were often duplicated in different areas of Kilkenny county, the list below is only meant to represent the unique names of the 1851 Kilkenny townlands. Variations in townland names were common in historical reference. For example, Kilcraggan was referred to as Kilcreggan and Killcroghan. There are townland names and boundaries that have also changed in the course of history. For example, Castlehale was a townland which existed for over 300 years, but was replaced and reduced shortly after the Cromwellian confiscations of the 16th century, becoming Rossenarra Demesne and parts of neighboring townlands. |

The Guardians of the Union were empowered to grant assistance for emigration and a small number got assistance from that source before and after the setting up the Workhouse - 4,854 individuals have been assisted to migrate - however, to get the assistance they had to give up their leases, many held from the 1700s and the lease could not be given to their heirs/relatives which proved most controversial. |

Windgap, County Kilkenny. Remains of an old home at a crossroads in the area of Windgap. The County Kilkenny is noteworthy for its shale deposits and coalmines. Perhaps, this is the reason for the use of the slatey tiles for the roof of this dwelling. A typical house of its period (c. mid-19th C. and later), with an interior wall almost dividing the building. This stone wall extended to within a couple of feet of the far side wall thus allowing the inhabitants to move freely from one side to the other. |

Research Help: Where Do Your Family Come From in Ireland? |
People ask me all the time where in Ireland their surname may be found. A lot of these people, their ancestor/s left Ireland pre the ‘main’ famine time so they never think to look in records that we have which are for a time later than that famine period, and they should, they should particularly look at the distribution in the Griffiths Primary Valuation as per the examples I give below. |

Possible that the name I’ve read as Henerey surname is Henesy really! 2 s’s run together in old form in 1809 – first looking like an f then an s. Went to 1817/1818 placename is given at this stage. Very few records for 1821 and no actual dates!! Actual years can be difficult to make out – 1822 seems to go on a long time with a Jan 1st and an Oct 5th entry on top and bottom of one page!! It could be that 1821 & 1822 are confused with years and this might account for missing 1821 entries! |

Some Irish Superstitions |
Superstition is generally regarded as the offspring of the religious instinct in man misled by ignorance. Few other human weakness’ have been so unsparingly and so unanimously denounced, and yet, it survives: the savage carries his charm, and the modern motorist or the regiment on the battlefield has its mascot. Above or behind probably a million doors in England the horseshoe will be found nailed up, and there is a general desire to avoid association with the unlucky number thirteen. Neither of these were Irish superstitions, but we are borrowing them, for to the anglicised Irish mind even superstition is respectable when it happens to be English. Irish superstitions on the other hand are rapidly dying out, not because they are superstitious, but because they are only Irish, and have no place in English social life. |
